Lake Travis summer fun

What could possibly say "summer" more than a picture like this?

What made this summer evening even better is that we shared it with Grammy, Grampy, and Joey.

Look, Mom--no hands.

Joey's maiden leap into Lake Travis

Hey, these life jackets really work!

Jimmer with his signature "meditation pose" jump.

An approximate 240 lb. cannonball

The aftermath

Grampy was a good sport and rode the "rolling taco" with Joey. (This is their third video clip. They just kept wanting to ride!)

Floating on the lake watching the setting sun--

Now that says summer.

Retirement Home Friends

We visited a nearby retirement home recently.

I love to see the cheerful looks on the residents' faces when they see young children walk through the door. (Joe and I are chopped liver at this point.)

Mikey perked up when this gentleman mentioned he used to fly B24 bombers in WWII. He told Mikey that they used to call the plane a "flying coffin" because the only exit was in the rear of the plane making it difficult to get out of in case of an emergency.

We're glad he can now laugh about it.

We're also glad to see that he and his wife still had a sense of humor after spending the evening at the E.R. after she fell out of bed and broke her arm in two places.

We've known this next gentleman for about four years now.

He's Yogi Berra's first cousin--really. At 95, Mr. Berra is as social as can be and invites our youngest to celebrate their November birthdays together. He loves to talk about the old farm back in St. Louis.

The kids always get a piece of fruit from his wheelchair stash.

It was one banana and three oranges this time! And I think his fruity gifts are very sweet.

Reminds me of when I worked as an elderly outreach volunteer in Appalachia. I rarely left a home without something--zucchini, green beans, even an owl statue once. Sweet.

We love to hear stories of the past from these residents.
We've met a widow whose husband was stranded on a South Pacific Island during the war.

We met a blind man who used to tune all of the concert pianos at the University of Texas.

We've met a former dancer, learned some Cajun traditions, heard the story of how a former nurse met her neurosurgeon husband on the job.

We've pet their cats and dogs, seen their frog figurine collections, looked through albums of their family photos, shared in their stories of celebration as well as tragedy...and have witnessed the end of some lives.

We have been enriched by it all, and the kids pray for these people and look forward to our visits.

One thing still has yet to be accomplished.

They haven't had the chance to drive one of these.

On the way out, Jimmer spotted one and said, "That electric chair over there looks too enticing. I wish I could hop on and go for a ride!"

I love his term, electric chair!

Luckily, we made it out before his willful resistance gave out! And maybe with luck, he'll eventually get the chance to pilot one.

He's already had a foot race against one older church friend who was driving full-tilt on his speedy electric wheelchair.

Oh Nine in a collage shell

I love going back and watching old family videos and looking at photo files from long ago and noticing all of the big changes that have taken place over the years.

Today, as I went back through the photo folders from this year and visually reviewed 2009 (a.k.a. Oh Nine), I am so very grateful for the wonderful memories we've made this year. We've managed to see most of our families, we've taken some fun trips, we've completed the first half of our 5th year of homeschooling, and (once again) Joe has been the king of fatherhood with the kids taking them on fun adventures while I take time to plan for school...and eat bon bons ; )

A photo collage to represent our year--month by month.

Top:
-The kids lost lots of teeth this year--starting out with Jimmer in January
-Lots of hiking and climbing miles under our belts
-A good Jeep mudding year, for sure

2nd Row:
-Mary Kate celebrated her First Communion
-She got to go to California with Gramma for a week
-Our male family members suffered the heat to watch the Red Bull X Fighters

3rd Row:
-Our kids love the homebound ministry we're involved with at church
-We did some spelunking--or, hiking below the ground
-We did a lot of hiking above the ground in the great Southwest

4th Row:
-No hiking (or walking) on water, so we just enjoyed a great big lake.
-Joe, a Longhorn of the university kind, & kids showed their 'Horns spirit
-Our love of Calvin & Hobbes just shines through the kids, don't you think?

A fabulously fun, fantastically busy, fully-lived year for which we're extremely grateful.

It's so satisfying to ring in the new year in a thankful spirit.

More Four Calling Birds Happenings :: Music

The kids have been doing a little of this lately.

Church Thanksgiving performance

Then they played at the Mary Lee Foundation, a community of support and apartment complexes for the disabled.

After the performance we saw this flash of red and white flying down the street headed for a bus stop!

A blurry Santa in a flying wheelchair.

On December 21, they got to play at the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar downtown at the Convention Center.

Their group, the Blazing Bows, played their set between The Biscuit Brothers and Joe McDermott.

As long as we were downtown, we walked through the Trail of Lights to see some friends perform in their middle school choir on the Candy Cane stage.

Love the yawning girl in the blue hat!

Trail of Lights main tree

Joe and the kids at the Yule Log fire.

Then as we were leaving the Trail of Lights, we ended up at a free outdoor concert by Asleep at the Wheel.

Lots of musical fun.

(Need) To Build a Better Trapeze

'Tis a lazy summer day.

Yep. Still summer here!

(Well, that is, after the kids had already finished all their school work and ran outside to play.)

The kids sought shelter from the sun in this lovely live oak tree.

I actually thought Jimmer may fall asleep like this.

How kids can sustain this squatting position I'll never know.

Mikey was busy setting up for his twin sister.

Kathleen was a happy camper with her new trapeze...

until...

...she dropped to the ground.

No net.

Unharmed.

Hmmm...need to fix that glitch.
Ah notha little experiment for them to work out.

As usual, Mary Kate hunted down a neighborhood pet (a cat this time) and was playing with it while our treetotalers were galavanting.

Ministry of Silly Walks

We came across this John Cleese video clip.

Needless to say, the kids enjoyed it...

...and have come up with their own versions of silly walks.

They kept coming up with better styles.

And for our most "reserved" of our bunch...

He was really rockin' this one, so we had to give him two sets.

A good indoor activity on a really hot summer day.

Are you involved with any ministries?

Maybe you'd like to try the Ministry of Silly Walks!

Homebound Mass & Luncheon

One of the ministries our family is involved with is serving the homebound by providing a communion service at their residence. Once a year though, we gather all of our homebound residents and bring them to our church for a special Mass and luncheon. Today was the day!

Confession: We've somewhat selfishly gotten involved in this ministry because our kids don't have a grandparent within 1100 miles and they have no great grandparents, so they love the interaction and have learned so much from these fun folks! I love how the children are naturally comfortable interacting with them whether the people like to joke around, need assistance, want to share their wonderful stories of the past, or ask for prayers. They also understand everyone needs a hug...and boy, do they know how to deliver!

As we pulled in to the church parking lot behind one of the home's vans, our kids dashed up to the doors to greet our guests.

Arrival.

Jimmer was a greeter/door holder (schmoozer, ham bone, charmer, etc.).

After Mass, Jimmer was walking to the dining room holding my hand and said in his regular (louder than normal) voice, "Do you know that lady in the bright pink outfit? She's 79 years old."

All I asked was if he had asked her or if she offered the information herself. Lucky for me, it was as I had hoped. Whew!

During the luncheon, Jimmer was snatched up by the same lady who he sat next to at last year's luncheon.

Reunited!

I'm not sure what it is about this little guy, but he's a magnet of sorts. Even our new associate pastor (first Mass at our parish, in fact!) started in on him!

Schmoozin'

Hammin'

The girls sat next to a few ladies who only had grown boys for children. They asked me if they could take them home with them for a while.

This lady just looked at Mary Kate's braided pigtails and said with nostalgia, "Ohhh...I remember so well how my mother did my hair like that when I was a little girl."

Mike had a lengthy conversation with another lady who said that he was just delightful.

(Always nice for a mother to hear--especially since after she said that, she turned to me and asked where his mother was.)

The kids visited some more with them as they waited for their buses to return.

Sweetness.
All the way around!
